The self-sufficient schools approach which is the subject of this handbook provides a possible answer to both these important questions. This innovative methodology, combining entrepreneurship and vocational education, not only increases the relevancy of learning, but through school-based businesses provides both a training ground for students and a means of finance for the school.

This handbook provides a detailed account of the need for such a model of education, and why it should focus on the agricultural sector. In it we will expand on key elements of the self-sufficient school concept presenting two short case studies highlighting institutions currently using this approach.

This handbook sets out the steps we believe are needed to advance further the development of this methodology, and suggest how its adoption might help plug the finance gap which currently limits the availability of sustainable post-primary education across the countries of Africa.
